Some 40.8 million people were living with HIV in 2024, with around 630,000 AIDS-related deaths — and eastern and southern Africa alone accounted for 21.1 million, more than half the global total (UNAIDS, 2025). Treatment reaches most but not all: 31.6 million of those 40.8 million were on antiretroviral therapy (77%), leaving about 23% untreated, and roughly 5.3 million did not know their status (UNAIDS, 2025). Expanded access has driven AIDS-related deaths down 70% since their 2004 peak and new infections down 61% since 1996, with the 95-95-95 targets charting the path to ending AIDS as a public-health threat (UNAIDS, 2025).
